NOVAE MILITIAE

I hear this term more and more, used approvingly with reference to themselves of course, from neoconservative talk show hosts.  Especially since the 2006 elections.

It's good to be associated with the "center" isn't it?  Gives the impression of moderation, rationality, and all that.  Who wants to be associated with us "nutters"?

Liberal Democrats claim the "center" too, calling themselves representatives of the "center-left."

How unwittingly they make the libertarian's and paleoconservative's point, that Republicans and Democrats are actually two sides of the same worthless coin.  And how crafty they are in perpetuating the notion that the "center-right/left" differs from their respective poles only in degree, when in fact they differ from both in kind.  Because if they had to own to that, they might be forced to concede that being a "centrist" is no virtue.
